Task 4 - Researching different routes into the media industry

One of the most popular ways to get into TV involves a lot of hard work. Usually you need to have a degree before you start, although it does not necessarily need to be in something relevant such as Media Studies.

If you can prove that you have the qualifications, small studios and companies may take you on as a ‘runner.’
In schools they offer media courses to get you started and teach you the basics of what you need to know in media in years 10 and 11 and if you like doing media you can get into college and university courses in later years.

There are many courses at college and university you can study in order to get into and get recognised in the media industry. Here are some of the courses you could choose from if you went to The Birmingham School of Media.

Some of the Undergraduate Courses

• BA (Hons) Media and Communication
• BA (Hons) Media and Communication (Journalism)
• BA (Hons) Media and Communication (Music Industries)
• BA (Hons) Media and Communication (Radio Production)
• BA (Hons) Media and Communication (Television)
• BA (Hons) Media and Communication (Web and New Media)

Some of the Postgraduate Courses

• MA Event and Exhibition Management
• MA Television & Interactive Content
• MA International Broadcast Journalism
• MA Freelance Photography
• MA Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise
• MA International Journalism
• MA Global Media Production

Task 2 (1.3) An Investigation into a figure in the media industry

Steven Spielberg

Steven Allan Spielberg, KBE (born December 18, 1946 is an American film director, screenwriter, and film producer. In a career spanning over four decades, Spielberg's films have taken up many themes and genres. Spielberg's early science-fiction and adventure films were seen as an archetype of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. In later years, his films began addressing such issues as the Holocaust, slavery, war and terrorism.

Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Three of Spielberg's films - Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993), achieved box office records, each becoming the highest-grossing film made at the time. To date, the unadjusted gross of all Spielberg-directed films exceeds $8.5 billion worldwide.

His first professional TV job came when he was hired to do one of the segments for the 1969 pilot episode of Night Gallery. The segment, "Eyes," starred Joan Crawford, and she and Spielberg were reportedly close friends until her death. The episode is unusual in his body of work, in that the camerawork is more highly stylized than his later, more "mature" films. After this, and an episode of Marcus Welby, M.D., Spielberg got his first feature-length assignment: an episode of The Name of the Game called "L.A. 2017." This futuristic science fiction episode impressed Universal Studios and they signed him to a short contract. He did another segment on Night Gallery and did some work for shows such as Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law and The Psychiatrist before landing the first series episode of Columbo (previous episodes were actually TV films).

Task 1 - Know about technologies, owenership and funding in the Tv and film industries - About Universal Studios

Universal Studios (sometimes called Universal City Studios or Universal for short), a subsidiary of NBC Universal, is one of the six major American movie studios. Its main motion picture production/distribution arm is called Universal Pictures.
Founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, It is one of the oldest American Movie studios still in continuous production. In 2004, the controlling stake in the company was sold by its owners at the time Vivendi Universal to General Electric, parent of NBC. The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBC Universal, while Universal Studios Inc remained the name of the production subsidiary.

In addition to owning a sizable film library spanning the earliest decades of cinema to more contemporary works, it also owns a lengthy collection of TV shows through its Subsidiary NBC Universal Television Distribution. It also acquired rights to several prominent film-makers works originally released by other studios through its subsidiaries over the years.

The company also owns a theme park license for Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, who appear at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida.
Its production studios are located at 100 Universal City Plaza Drive in Universal City, California. Distribution and other corporate offices are based in New York City. Universal Pictures is the second longest-lived Hollywood studio; Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures is the oldest by a month.
How the development of technology has affected Universal Studios.
The studios were built in 1993 by Pacific Recorders and Engineering. While only small changes have been made throughout the nine years of faithful service, Universal felt that the time was right to perform a complete upgrade. Now that the renovation is complete, the overall form of the studios has not changed much from the original design, but the technology behind the equipment certainly has.
The park is open year round, and during the peak season the studios are used almost every day. The associated parks offer visitors plenty of entertainment and the new radio studios offer visiting stations a modern and efficient space from which to broadcast. It truly has combined form and function in unique way.

The radio studio engineers were pleased with the work that PR&E did originally. Over the years, Universal worked with Harris on equipment upgrades as well. When Universal decided to renovate the studios, the radio staff turned to the same people for help. Now that PR&E is a part of Harris, the decision was simplified.
How Universal Studios is funded
Universal Studios is funded by many advertisements that are put on films they release before the film starts. So when a film begins Universal’s logo comes up with the small advert for them with the spinning globe. They are also funded by how many people visit their theme parks and use their attractions. Another way Universal is funded is by the website that they created.

The company’s ownership

General Electrics owns 80% of Universal Studios and is a public service global company. This meaning the company supplies goods to the public like electrical goods such as : Genie; Jet engines; Electricity; Entertainment; Finance; Gas turbines; GE Jenbacher gas engines; Industrial Automation; Lighting; Medical imaging equipment; Medical technology; Electric motors; Wind turbines; TV and motion pictures.

Vivendi SA, who owns the other 20% of Universal Studios, is a French international media conglomerate with activities in music, television and film, publishing, telecommunications, the Internet, and video games. It is also a public service company. The company does Music publishing; film production; publishing; pay TV services; television broadcasting; telecommunication services and video game publishing.
